Laser Hair Removal: Everything You Need to Know

How many sessions do you need? Does it hurt? Is it safe for dark skin? We answer every question we get asked about laser hair removal.
How does laser hair removal work?
Laser energy is absorbed by the melanin pigment in the hair follicle, converting to heat that damages the follicle's ability to regrow. Only hairs in the active growth phase (anagen) can be targeted, which is why multiple sessions are required β hair grows in cycles, and not all follicles are in anagen simultaneously.
How many sessions will I need?
Most clients require 6 to 8 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart for the face, or 6 to 8 weeks apart for the body. After a full course, most clients achieve 80 to 90% permanent hair reduction. Annual maintenance sessions may be needed for hormonally active areas such as the chin or upper lip.
Does it hurt?
Modern diode lasers are significantly more comfortable than older systems. Most clients describe the sensation as a warm flick β comparable to a rubber band snap. We apply a topical numbing cream to more sensitive areas such as the bikini line and underarms. Treatment is fast, with a full leg taking around 20 to 30 minutes.
Is it safe for all skin tones?
Our diode laser technology is safe for Fitzpatrick skin types I through VI, including darker skin tones. Older ruby or alexandrite lasers are contraindicated for darker skin as they cannot distinguish between melanin in the skin and the hair follicle. Always confirm your clinic uses equipment rated for your skin type.
What to do before your session
Shave the treatment area 24 hours before your appointment. Do not wax, thread, or pluck for at least 4 weeks prior β these methods remove the follicle entirely, leaving nothing for the laser to target. Avoid sun exposure and self-tan for 2 weeks before treatment and ensure the area is clean and product-free on the day.
